Within the 915 Express Chipset (Northbridge)…
Memory Controller : The new memory controller now supports both DDR and DDR2 memory modules ranging from DDR333 to DDR2-533. Since DDR2 memory modules are costlier, 'Sonoma' notebooks can be configured to retail with either DDR or DDR2 memory. It goes without saying that the costlier DDR2 configuration is the way to go if you want to get a high performance notebook that truly capitalizes on the wider 533MHz bus, not to mention a synchronous memory and front side bus clock speed will greatly improve the memory subsystem's performance. Don't be mistaken though, you won't find a notebook with both DDR and DDR2 memory support, as you cannot mix these two memory technologies together, similar to its desktop counterpart.
x16 PCI Express : The most prominent benefit brought about by the new platform is undoubtedly PCI Express support. This bi-directional high-speed serial connection provides point-to-point wired connections between the chipset and expansion cards. Designed to replace the legacy PCI bus, PCI Express technology is used as an interconnect solution for graphics card and other peripherals. The 915 Express hub features an x16 PCI Express interconnect that provides the power and bandwidth needed by modern discrete graphics chipsets as it boasts a total data throughput of up to 8GB/s - almost a four-fold increase as compared to AGP 8x.
Within the ICH6-M (Southbridge)…
Serial ATA (SATA) : Lacking in the Intel ICH5-M family, the ICH6-M puts SATA connection above the slower Parallel ATA (PATA) interface as the primary storage subsystem. PATA (Ultra ATA/100) is still supported, but have been relegated to serve as an interface for optical drives. Depending on manufacturers and vendors once again, some 'Sonoma' notebooks can be configured to exclude SATA hard disk drives altogether. This would probably be true in the initial phases due to limited quantity of 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drives.
x1 PCI Express : While the ICH6-M allows board designs that could accommodate up to four x1 slots, system designers are free to utilize these to their discretion. Some examples of peripherals that would make use of these slots include Gigabit Ethernet, TV tuner/capture devices and FireWire 800. The high-end peripherals requires the bandwidth provided by PCI Express and only the x1 PCI Express interface cah provide a bandwidth of up to 500MB/s - more than 3.5x the speed of PCI. PCI Express will also make its way to replace traditional PCMCIA slots found in notebooks and they will appear in the form of ExpressCards.
Intel High-Definition Audio (Azalia): With 192khz/24-bit audio quality that is comparable to discrete audio solutions, the Intel HD Audio supports 7.1-channel audio and a host of audio formats such as DVD Audio, Dolby Digital Surround EX, THX and DTS-ES. These are not possible on the older AC'97 standard.
Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG (Calexico 2)
Going into 2005, the wireless component in the new Centrino is now a tri-mode solution that supports 802.11b (11Mbps), 802.11g (54Mbps at 2.4GHz) and 802.11a (54Mbps at 5GHz). Made possible by Intel's new PRO/Wireless 2915abg, new Centrino (Sonoma) notebooks with this tri-mode WLAN solution will have complete compatibility in all wireless environments. As good as this sounds, manufacturers and vendors will still not be featuring this in every new Centrino notebook. Save for higher end models and depending on regions, consumers can expect to find the more common dual mode Intel PRO/Wireless 2200bg WLAN card parked inside these new Centrino (Sonoma) models.
